January 10th 2012 Meeting

First speaker was Jeff Finn, bringing us up to date on SEVA's legislative agenda. Upcoming is WA's short session. First though, West Coast Electric Highway is narrowing down choices for two more quick-charge station out I-90 on Snoqualmie Pass. Construction has begun on the quick-charge (level 3) charging station near Bellingham and most others are planned for Spring 2012.

There are currently three active bills that affect EVs: 1. 2ESSB 5251 $100 annual license fee 2. HB 2106 HOV lane access by Sen Frockt (introduced when he was a representative). He is our biggest EV proponent in the Congress. 3. HB 1758 Sales tax exemption for plug-in hybrids

1. Needs a full House vote; after that it would probably breeze though the Senate. So the best way is to stop it in the House so please pressure your representative to vote against it. 2. Needs a House sponsor; people in the 33rd Legislative District (SeaTac, Des Moines, Kent) should pressurize Rep Dave Upthegrove chairman of the Environmental Committee to be the sponsor. 3. Make motion to support

Other legislative ideas:

  • Special License Plate -- would need a volunteer from SEVA to champion;

another idea brought up was just a plate Frame, which would be far easier to pull off...

Stephen Johnsen and Ron Easley shared about the November trip they took with Chad Hohn down to Southern California and back without using any gasoline. Three guys, a 1997 GM S-10E packed full of gear and their lithium Range Trailer weighed in at just over 8,000 lbs of total vehicle/trailer weight! The three covered about 3,000 miles in 6 days driving from Maple Valley to the Southern California Coast just North of Los Angeles and back again. Relatively quick charging was accomplished using public Tesla HPC stations as well as even faster charging at RV parks where they used a special combiner box and isolation toroid to add extra chargers and pull a total of nearly 35,000 watts! More photos and information from the trip is available at the Range Trailer's facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Range-Trailer/257589060955815
