October 11th 2011 Meeting

Hello Everyone,

We had a decently-attended meeting today, driven inside by some downpour.

Just an editorial comment. For a cold and partly rainy October night, I think a count of 70 persons is more than decent... I would use the words surprised and Pleased Rusty West talked about driving a Tesla Model S sedan prototype. Supposed to have a short battery the full length of the car and have 300 mile range. His son is the Director of Power Train Engineering at Tesla.

Chad Schwitters encouraged us to attend National Plug-In Day on October 16 on Mercer Island. 60 vehicles signed up so far!

For more INFO on National Plug-In-Day go to ( http://www.pluginamerica.org/pluginday ) or contact Chad Schwitters at chad-at-pluginamerica.org. Chad also added a PS. to Rusty's presentation on the Tesla Model S, that they will have a SPORT model with a FANTASTIC under 5 second 0-60 mph. $ $ Price yet to be determined $ $ $

Jeff Finn mentioned they are installing more charging stations at the airport. On the legislative front, a short session is coming up next which will mostly concentrate on budget cutting. There seems to be support for a voluntary Vehicle Mileage Tax. Rep. Frocht has introduced HB 2106 which would allow HOV access for any production vehicle that plugs in, but apparently not conversions.

Dave Cloud told us why he got started making electric cars -- to save the world! From a young age he's been converting vehicles on the cheap to show it can be done, from hydroplaning bicycle boats to world-record-setting electric boats and more.

South Seattle Community College has a few classes coming up. See http://learnatsouth.org/index.cfm?method=ClassListing.ClassListingDisplay&int_category_id=3&int_sub_category_id=125 for more details. ONE course Yours Truly should take is the one on AC Induction Motors... Since almost cross the board, all production EV's us AC.

We also reviewed briefly the EVents of the last month, to include Moving Planet at So. Lk Union, where we had a very large E-Bike group and 5 LEAFS, and a Tesla. And Sustainable Ballard where we did get a BREAK in the rain for an hour. And then Microsoft “Scoop on Cool Careers” with Jay Inslee giving inspirational speech to all the Jr. High students. And last but not least a small gathering of EV's to christen the 3 new BLINK charging stations at the Sears Store in Shoreline at 155th and Aurora.

It was brought to our attention that Yonkers Mitsubishi in So.Renton will be hosting a Ride-N-Drive of the new US version of the iMiev.. simply called the "i" from 4 pm to 8 pm Thursday 10/13

We gave Ivan Workman a round of applause for his new position as Sales Rep at Stadium Nissan, and his first sale of a new Nissan LEAF.

Stefanie Frease, a new Sales Rep for Jim Johnson and MC-EV has a copy of the movie "Charge" a documentary of the Electric Motorcycle racing on the Isle of Man in the UK. Several folks are already planing to attend her Open House to view the movie THIS SATURDAY ( 10/15) at her Town House, "On the Park" just above the QFC in Ballard at 2233 N W 58th Street. 6:30 pm... When you arrive, give Stefanie a call at 206 372 7980, and she will let you up.

Bob B. a new LEAF owner, gave a very strange story about his LEAF showing nearly NO Charge and having NO Range yet after charging for 5 hours. Also having problems with entry with the key fob. When he made an appointment with the dealer less than 6 miles away, as his wife drove to the dealership range meter went from 5 miles UP to 60. After the dealer could not find anything, they returned home, and the mileage meter went up to 85 !! Go Figure ? ? ?

Stephen Johnsen is taking picture contributions for a new SEVA calendar. Email them to hpev-at-comcast.net

I (Cory Cross) talked about a battery cycler tester I am sponsoring for a Gonzaga University. We're developing an inexpensive cycler capable of 300A discharge and 30A charging at a low cost, so many can be built. We have various tests we want to see their affect on cycle life, which is why we need the device to be cheap so many can be built. 2000 cycles with rest periods takes a minimum of 200 days, so it's important to have many units to do all the wanted tests, but it isn't practical if it costs too much.

Jeff Finn showed off information from his solar system. His system has several different panels with "micro-inverters" on each panel, which communicate to the manufacturer so you can log into their website and view your production stats in real time via any web page.

Your SEVA Secretary,
Cory
