The energy efficiency of ethanol from corn is 1.3 (i.e., for every kilowatt of fossil fuel you put in, you get 1.3 kilowatts out). The energy efficienty of ethanol from sugar cane is 8 (which is why brazil is so far ahead than us in biofuels) Biodiesel 2.5. Cellulose is from 2 to 36, depending on the method. unfortunately the technology is still in development. algae are also very promising.
