- More corn now goes to production of fuel than for food. It takes 510 pounds of corn to produce 13 gallons of ethanol. That much corn could feed a child in Zambia or Mexico for a year. Even more interesting than the article is the spirited discussions after the article.

- The energy efficiency of ethanol from corn is 1.3 (i.e., for every kilowatt of fossil fuel you put in, you get 1.3 kilowatts out). The energy efficienty of ethanol from sugar cane is 8 (which is why brazil is so far ahead than us in biofuels) Biodiesel 2.5. Cellulose is from 2 to 36, depending on the method. unfortunately the technology is still in development. algae are also very promising.
