June 12th 2012 Meeting
The first order of business was "Gasless on Greenwood" Saturday June 30th. The display site is in our usual position at 83rd and Greenwood, but the building's new proprietors are a Medical Marijuana Shop. Steve Lough went into the construction site of this new shop to secure the parking lot for the event.
Last year we had 32 cars which won the biggest car club of the entire car show! Let's see if we can increase our participation to secure our standing from last year as there is still time to sign up! Contact our president Steve Lough to secure your position. Dave Denhart will once again be there early in the morning to reserves spots for the event. Dave is looking for volunteers to help him. He can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org. A picnic for all will be in preparation before 4PM when the festivities of the Greenwood car show end. The picnic's location is campsite #3 @ Woodland Park located @ 50th and Whitman east of Aurora Avenue. At last report 20 entries for the event.
Steven Lough has handouts for increasing the membership to SEVA. Until last year SEVA was the biggest group with-in parent group, the EAA, but this year the Silicon-Valley Electrical Automobile Association has surpassed our membership by approximately 5 members. We are all encouraged to help in increasing membership.
It was agreed upon in group discussion that http://www.recargo.com/ was one of the better sites to find EV charging locations.
Steven Lough made note as he does for every meeting that there were.. 9 first timers @ the meeting, 16 Leafs, 6 homebuilt EV's, 1 Tesla,1 RAV EV, 1 Ford Ranger, and over 70 folks @ the meeting.
Tom and Cathy Saxton next presented the study that Tom created for presentation @ EVS 26 last month. Tom compiled information on many variables of charging stations and then illustrated them in a useful manner, exposing trends even the companies installing the EVSEs were not aware of. Variables included: charging per price per hour, corresponding use and price, and the breakeven point for the install of a charger.
Tom said in general if business does install a charging station and profits are to be made for providing this charger service it is best done by "indirect revenue", which would mean money spent at the place of business that was not including the price of the charging. This is an on going and growing data base. Tom would appreciate if you all would go to http://www.pluginamerica.org/evi-survey/ and complete the survey. That link also includes the results to date as well. This data base will be useful in creating a better charging infrastructure.
Jeff Finn presented an update on the SEVA "Charge for Change" program. On May 30th, the ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the first public quick-charge station at the Custer Southbound Safety Rest Area! Charge for Change is sponsoring the first three years of electricity. For more details and pictures, download the slides from http://pacificev.com/ChargeForChangeStatus2012-06-12.pdf
- Auto Angels June 16th
- Also on June 16th Cathy Saxton reminded all of the EV-Rally over Highway 2, to Wenatchee. Cars will be spread out approximately an hour apart from each other so as to not bunch up at the DC Fast Charging stations along the route.
- Green Transportation @ Seattle Community College June 27th
- Transit Trivia sign-up by 6/25 contest on June 27th
- The 20th Annual Greenwood Car Show will be held on Saturday June 30th, 2012
Our Vice-President Stephen Johnsen was down at EVS-26 and took some interesting pictures of current DC fast charging plugs Unfortunately there are too many standards, which are American, European, Chinese, and finally CHAdeMO. On the return trip they also had quite an array of pictures of charging station in Oregon and Washington not far from the I-5 corridor. It was quite an extensive survey of the locations. Stephen and his compatriot Ron Easley also have some amazing pictures of the removal of the Leaf's battery pack in hopes of putting in parallel the range trailer to increase the mileage to over 200 miles between charges They have already had a hitch designed for this purpose.
Dave Cloud has been racing his built and designed Electrathon racers for the past 22 years. He gave a presentation mostly explaining the recent races down @ Portland International Raceway were his wife, daughter Shannon, Dave O'Neil and Bruce Sherry won on both long and short track races. But Dave seemed most delighted to get the SCREWED AWARD, which his team has not received for several years... Was it awarded because he had to put out a wire fire in one of his racecars with cans of soft drinks, or was its Bruce Sherry's crash into the wall @ 60 m.p.h and still finishing the race?
President Steve gave the SEVA members a chance to get a good look at the SEVA Trophy, which will be passed on to another deserving SEVA member come July, and invited folks to give the Board of Directors some input as to whom might be deserving.
Then, last but not least, our Sandy Smith was back with us at the meeting last night! I have every reason to hope that she will continue to make a complete recovery. She did a GREAT job selling raffle tickets as she has done so many times before. Cathy Saxton drew the winning ticket which went to Bruce Sherry. Congrats!
And as always, if we have left something or some one out, please feel free to send an edit along, and see you all at "Gasless on Greenwood" and the July 10th meeting.
