A Very Lively EVening !

First things First:

In respect to our fallen EV'ers.... The NAME I could not bring back from memory at the meeting, yet many knew 'he was no longer with us' is Jim Barrett - of Redmond... I apologize for not being able to bring it to memory when I had the opportunity... in front of every one.

I counted at least 6 or 7 new faces or folks who have just recently joined. This is very good. And even better Two young ladies...

Discussions started with reminders of Important upcoming EVents that we have been invited to, and or committed to.

  1. Who Killed the Electric Car - Mt. Vernon, Washington The old Lincoln Theater 7 pm Sept. 29th 2006 Panel discussions to follow the movie, and I will be there to answer questions.
  2. Sustainable Ballard Festival - Sunday October 1st. Our Pres. Steve - to Speak on EVs and PHEVs at 11:50 am in the Transportation Tent. Steven Bernheim has told us he would be glad to bring his Sparrow.. ( We could use ONE MORE EV..? )
  3. At a Cost of $30. I have signed us UP for participation in 2006 ODYSSEY DAYS - "Driving Towards the EverGreener State" Shoreline Community College Campus Friday and Saturday, Oct 13, 14th They have also contacted Ryan.. They are VERY KEEN to have a PHEV there on display.... (This Transportation Festival co-insides with similar Odysee Festivals ALL over the Nation ! )

Then we had reports from Don "Father Time" on the NEDRA races in Portland, and his trip back to the Mid-West for the big Hot Rod Engine and Engineering Show, where they showed John Waylandl's "White Zombie" and one of Don's Drag Bikes. There was LOTS of interest in the EV technology and the fantastic drag times our cars were capable of..

Dave Cloud was next, to talk of what happened to his 10 - Electric Motor Geo Metro in Portland. Dave was the first car to run, before dark Friday. According to Dave, even though weeks of work and nearly $1000. in expenses was put into the car so it could certify that it could Back-Up at the start line if necessary.... reversing some of the 10 motors in this way, may have done damage to one or more of the PM Motors. Any way.... at a run which probably could have been OVER 100, a motor let go, and started a little fire... ( the size of a candle or two ) but as Dave's driver Steve... pulled off the track, none of the Safety Crew knew he was in trouble.. the fire grew, and consumed much of the area round the motors, controllers and batteries. The Safety folks finally came, put out the fire, and Dave has already proceeded to Re-Build to prove his point that 'several low voltage motors can do what one High Voltage car can do' Dave and Bruce Sherry also reported on TWO First Place victories in Portland last week in Electrathon Racing. Both Bruce and Dave's daughter racing in High school Class came in FIRST ! Congratulations ! Then we had a new member/guest James Childres - a Boeing Engineer in Electric Motors, report on a new Switch-Reluctance type motor, called Parallel Path Magnetic Technology.. that he and his partners Flyn, have been working on. He proceeded to explain and demonstrate the switching of flux, and that these motors can hold their 97%+ efficiency through their whole speed and torque range, rather than just one particular sweet spot. The magnetic physics behind their ideas are too involved to try and explain here.. Check out their web site at http://www.flynnresearch.net Bottom Line is they may DONATE one of these $8,000. motors to some of our members, to go HEAD-To-HEAD with some of our existing favorites like ADC, E-Tek,and Lynch, etc. to PROVE their Point. Dave Cloud may be first in line...

Our HOST, Chuck says that Next Month, October 10th meeting may be BACK in the Old House to the North of the Drive Way.

Looking forward to these multiple EV-ents over the next month. Hope you folks can all attend... ( and HELP OUT TOO !!! )
