Unless otherwise posted here, or sent out over the SEVA Maillist each Monthly Meeting is Held on the Evening of the Second Tuesday of each Month commencing at 7 p.m. or there about. Meetings are held at the Church of the Nazarene at 44th St. NE, and 3rd Ave NE, just behind Dicks Drive In on 45th. Their fire damage has been repaired, and they welcome us back. We encourage visitors and members to help support this free venue with the purchase of some fine coffee and other refreshments downstairs at the Mosaic Community Coffee House.

As I know that many more folks read our "Meeting Minutes" than some times attend our meeting, we are amending the meeting minutes here below to include all the topics which were part of our May 8th meeting.
Thanks again to our Secretary Cory for the original post, and to Jeff Finn, Don Bear, and Ron Johnston-Rodriguez for the additional information and reminders.
Unfortunately, we did not get a HEAD Count, nor take note of the number of EV's in the parking lot. This is always an interesting statistic to look back on..

Today we had a big change of pace with the meeting being run by Cathy Saxton and Jeff Finn, and they did a great job! Before the meeting we had some fun in the sun checking out several electric vehicles in the parking lot and just general chat. Cathy then got us started inside at 7:00 on the dot. After a brief summary of SEVA and the agenda tonight, we jumped into our first speaker. Deb Seymour introduced Andrea James, who recently led her on an investor's tour of Tesla Motors.
Andrea researches disruptive technology businesses for investors, for a living, and researches and analyzes Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA). (She went through a lot of information, so I gleaned what I could, but I certainly didn't catch everything). When she first started researching Tesla, she called Daimler and they said Tesla had battery technology no one else had, which led to her to become more positive on the company's long term prospects. There are three major differentiating factors for Tesla: they have the best battery technology/electric cars; ended up buying the highly-efficient NUMMI factory for only $42M, though it is estimated to be worth $1B; and have a unique "retail store" concept. Each of those alone might not be enough, but together they could be very disruptive. The retail store is a very small place for selling cars only, and have maintenance somewhere else, allowing more selling locations in higher-density places. They are on track for making the ~$30k car in 2014 or 2015 and the model S should be coming out within a couple months on schedule or maybe even early! Dave Cloud asked if they actually make money on selling their cars -- she analyzes whether they can actually make money by guessing the parts and manufacturing costs and see if they can make a profit. As far as she can tell, their gross profits are positive for the Roadster and will be for the next car. Her estimate is the stock is worth $40. She also estimates Tesla's 85kwh battery costs $27k, about half what it would cost the other manufacturers to make a similar-sized battery pack (and about the cost of what us converters pay for CALB or Thundersky batteries in low quantity!)
Zach Fung presented some of the reasons behind their electric Formula SAE car. Formula SAE is a college small go-kart-sized race competition. They ended up building an electric vehicle with the same weight of the gas version and about the same performance. Genie Industries supplied a free controller and $7500. They used a AC35 motor, the highest-power Curtis AC controller, an Elithion BMS, LiPo batteries from airplane cells, and an E Motor Werks open-source charger kit they assembled themselves. They designed and waterjet the adapter plates. He's guessing they have 1500 hours into the project. They brought it to the meeting and showed some video of it racing around! In 2013 there's going to be an electric-only SAE Formula race and they want to have a showing there.
Zach and a team member showed up with the actual Formula SAE EV for Show n; Tell. I think Rich Rudman really enjoyed sharing his expertise regarding battery pack charging and electrical wiring requirements with Zach before the meeting.
Jeff Finn reminded those at the meeting about one of the EV movements more inspirational leaders, Marcelo da Luz. Marcelo built a solar powered EV, "X of 1." He drove "X of 1" all around North America including a visit to Seattle as well as driving it north of the Artic Circle and back twice. Marcelo's motto is, "One person can change the world, you!" Marcelo is currently in his 8th day of a 28-day protest walk pulling his solar powered EV from Toronto to Ottawa, the capital of the province of Ontario. He is pulling his "X of 1" as a protest because "X of 1" has been legal to operate on the roads everywhere except Marcelo's home province of Ontrario. Jeff then publicly announced SEVA's new fee-free Public Charging Station Program! What originally had started as a project to sponsor the cost of electricity for a couple of charging stations has now been transformed into a significant community service project. SEVA ran a contest to name the project and the name was chosen by the SEVA board without knowing who submitted the names. The winning name selected for the new program is "Charge for Change". The submitter was Dave Barden for which he won a priceless piece of memorabilia for his part! Another element of the program is building a for-the-public education website. The program's first goal is to raise $5000 to sponsor the initial project for which an agreement is being finalized. If we can raise more than the $5,000, additional fee-free charging stations can be funded. The more we can do to encourage EV adoption the more we make our world better. The first stage of the program's fund raising effort was to raise $2000 toward the first project's total commitment of $5,000.. The $2,000.00 represented the amount needed immediately for program set-up and an initial electricity cost deposit. There will be an online contribution website where all SEVA members and supporters can donate to the program, The URL will be announced when "Charge for Change" site is ready to accept donations in the next week or so.

Cathy showed off photos from Bookman's Spring Thaw EV drag race down in Tucson, Arizona. Friday they had a "show and shine" with all kinds of cool projects to show off in addition to the race cars. Since they were rained out Saturday, they had an informal warehouse gathering with some classic EVs from the early 1900s (maybe late 1800s?) and our favorite White Zombie and many more. We also had Ron's email with the details. However, it wasn't exactly clear whether the dealer's EVs were being counted in with the allocation breakdown Ron provided. You may want to get that clarified with him. Cathy discussed the event while displaying the Seattle Center map. She explained the detailed instructions for driving to the display on the Center's grounds.. We would LOVE to have folks e-mail any of the board members to let us know who will be attending Saturday, 5/19 2012 Here are the general directions from Ron Johnston-Rodriguez:
We can accommodate up to 25 vehicles (EVs and PHEVs).
Stadium Nissan will have 2-3 vehicles on display, so we'd like a few more Leafs, and the a good mix of other vehicles. Our ideal mix of SEVA member (25) vehicles would be:
- 4 Leafs 4 Mitsubishis* 4 Volts* 4 Toyota Prius plug-ins* 2 Teslas* 1 Motorcycle* 6 of any type/custom · Vehicles should plan to arrive between 8:00 - 9:30 a.m.· Enter Seattle Center via the Gate located at 2nd & Thomas.
· Pass through the gate and take the first right onto Harrison Street. Drive down Harrison until you are directed to your exhibition location (either along Harrison Street, near Center Square or inside Center Square). · Contact: Ron Johnston-Rodriguez at 509-664-5061
John Mark DID discuss our initiative to increase our EAA membership count, so as to regain our position as the Largest EAA chapter. I would encourage folks to carry the 3 page hand out with us at all times, and if a new EV owner is spotted, to give them one. Also to reproduce the hand outs for distribution to EV Dealers.
Applications for the Greenwood Car Show June 30th were given out with the instructions to fill them out and get them back to SEVA H.Q. to be turned over to Greenwood folks all at one time.
