SEVA March 11th Meeting Minutes:
What a glorious day, and evening. You can really tell how a bit of sun and extra evening light bring out the Electric Cars. Three Tesla-S’s, Tesla Roadster, A dozen or more LEAFS, Two “Mi-EV”s A New Fiat 500e, a Ford Electric TRANSIT Van, and the normal mix of Home Built"s to include Jeff’s Volt Runner, Dave B’s Flat Bed Nissan PU, John Rue’s Del Sol, and Bruce’s JMJ... ( hope I did not’t miss any one. We had three new guests, to include the OEVA’s chapter Treasurer, and his new S85 Tesla-S up from Oregon.

President Stephen brought the meeting to order, with Mark S. VP and Mark Y. Treasurer present, with Steve Lough standing in for Kevin B. Recording Secretary. Apologies for not bringing our Video Projector, but member Corry and Dad, brought their Big Screen iMac Desk top to stand in.

Good reports on EV Market Penetration for Washington State. Per Capita we have more EV Owners than California or any other state. EV Registration up 47% over 2012.

EV-e n t s and there are a LOT of them. ( NOTE to John Rue ! or Chad Shwitters ? ? )

Electric Vehicles Table

TOCright

A conversion electric vehicle is a car which has been converted from an internal combustion engine (ICE) drive to an electric propulsion drive vehicle. The conversion EV is the most widespread form of electric vehicle on the road today.

One reason the conversion is so popular among EV enthusiasts (aside from the relative lack of economical production electric vehicles) is the possibility of recycling an ICE car which has otherwise outlived its useful life. Another has to do with the fact that the scratchbuilt EV must incorporate the plethora of complex features normally available ready-made on a conversion candidate vehicle: the drive system, all of the mandated safety features, creature comforts, product design, and the frame itself.

Almost any small, compact ICE vehicle in good structural condition can form the basis for a successful EV conversion. The first step in the process is to remove all of the systems related solely to the gas powered engine drive system: the engine itself, the starter motor, the fuel tank, exhaust pipes, muffler, and cooling system (radiator).

The major components of the electric propulsion system consist of an electric motor, batteries, a charger, and a controller. Additionally, various items of support hardware are required, including connectors (wiring), safety devices (fuses), monitoring devices, and interface hardware (such as the adaptor plate).

The items necessary for a conversion can be purchased separately or in kit form. In some cases, the kits which are available are specifically tailored to the type of vehicle. In any case, the component parts must work well together as a system.

Cost for a Sample Conversions
In general, any small car can be converted / recycled to electric drive. Essentially all the complex systems such as the "exhaust system", "cooling system", "fuel delivery system", and motor are replaced with the following:

An Advanced DC electric motor connected to the existing standard transmission via an adaptor plate. Motor $1450. Adaptor Plate $700.

Electronic transistorized controller (like a giant light dimmer) controls your power and speed. By Curtis-PMC $1200. or the more powerful ZILLA controllers from $2000. to $4000 If your going RACING !!

Battery charger, fully automatic. Plug it in and walk away for days without harm to the batteries. from $900. OR from our very own MANZANITA MICRO high powered chargers from $2000 to $2900.

Batteries, 10 - 12 volt, 0r 20 - 6 volt, deep cycle lead acid totaling 120 volts. Choice is one of maximum acceleration or maximum range. $1950. Sets of lighter, more powerful Lithium batteries can run any where from $8000. to $20,000.

On/Off power relays, h.d. fuses, h.d. connectors, battery cables, volt meter (measures pressure) and an ammeter (to measure to flow or use of the electricity) $1,200.

Total hardware $8,500. to $25,000. Assembly and labor (approximately 200 hours) $5,000. to $10,000.

Approximate grand is really too difficult to pin down. Variables exist from car to car as to total labor. There are various upgrades available in equipment and instrumentation to customize the car to the customers liking. * Prices subject to changes without notice by suppliers.

Registration
The regulations for licensing your converted vehicle vary from state to state. Wikipedia reports, for instance, that registration in California might be the hardest part in your conversion. Users in Washington state, however, report that it merely requires a visit to a licensing office and a $15 fee.

It would be helpful for people to report additional experiences here....
*: Welcome to Greenflight EV! This blog is dedicated to the conversion of my 1988 Mazda B2200 pickup to 100% battery electric power. My name is Andrew. I'm 16 years old, and I've always had an interest in vehicles of any kind. I also have a "do more with less" attitude, and a concern for what the petroleum industry is doing to our society and our environment. I want to show how easy it is to convert to electric, and how practical these vehicles are for everyday driving.
EVENTS – We are invited to Newcastle’s Earth Day on April 19th. More information as it becomes available. We are a long way from the heavy “show season,” but the invitations are already coming in.

WEBSITE HAND-OFF – The new website has been handed off from its creators to SEVA. Now, the job of populating it with useful and informative content begins.

OTMAR’S STRETCHLA – Otmar is taking a wrecked Tesla Model S and is incorporating it into his stretched Vanagon. http://cafeelectric.com/stretchla/

WELCOME NEW VISITORS – We have six new people at our meeting tonight. Welcome!

LEGISLATIVE REPORT – It’s time for the biennial “short” session. Jeff Finn cautions that there will be few bills that will be getting a hearing. SEVA officially endorses SB6001, the Supplemental Transportation Appropriations package. You are encouraged to contact your lawmakers and indicate your support. Attention is also being paid to making California’s Zero Emission Vehicle mandate regulations applicable in WA State, and appropriate funds to extend the Road Usage Charge research, planning, and implementation processes. We want to eliminate the $100 fee for motorcycles.

CHECK OUT THE FIAT – We were very pleased to have Roger's Fiat 500e out in the parking lot for this month’s meeting. Let’s hope it is the first of many.

JEREMY SMITHSON – Gave his presentation on “EVSE REHAB – New Life for an Old Box.” Jeremy went over his own personal voyage in converting an older 1990s Avcon EVI charging station to a new 60A one with modern J1772 cable and EMW “Juicebox” innards.

TRED – Is a new car delivery service that delivers … test drives! For a fee, you can reserve a car on the Internet, that car will be delivered to your doorstep, and you can test drive the car on the roads that you would ordinarily use. Our presenter , Keoni Ho, announced that Tred is including test drives of electrics and hybrids … for free!

RELAYRIDES – You can now rent your car out to others in a new peer-to-peer rental system. You can set the price, you can determine who you rent to, and so on. Use your vehicle to make money. Check out RelayRides. And (big coincidence) our member Lee Colleton has used this to rent out his Mitsubishi iMiev electric car!

SEVA Meeting Minutes: December 10, 2013, –Called to order. Officers introduced. 34 persons in attendance.

GREETINGS FROM THE NEW PRESIDENT!! President Stephen Johnsen has carefully reviewed the EAA handbook and is looking for ways to improve the general running of the organization, so that future SEVA officers will have an easier time of it. He made clear some other goals: to make us the biggest organization in the U.S., and to continue in our core goal: to educate, demonstrate, and proliferate electric vehicles. Stephen also announced that we will have a short survey that the new board will use to shape the future of SEVA and how the meetings will be run.

TREASURY REPORT. Mark Yormark reports $2,799.48 with $385 in two accounts. $1,223.44 in the dues account. Mark has been working to get an EIN assigned so that SEVA will have its own committed number. Also, we are working to see if SEVA wishes to continue structured as a type “U” chapter of the EAA or to restructure as a type "I" chapter still under the EAA but as it's own separate 501c(3).

LOOKING AHEAD – While it is not yet “show season,” SEVA is already looking ahead to our big car shows: Gasless in Greenwood, the Silent Thunder Electric Nationals at Pacific Raceways, National Plug-In Day, and other events. We endeavor to be as proactive as possible. We know these events are coming: we want to be ready when they happen. We are also in place to have not one but TWO car shows at XXX Root Beer, as well as getting charging stations on-site at that location.

GET ON THE EMAIL LIST. Get on SEVA’s list for all sorts of news and information at: www.seattleeva.org The new website framework is nearly complete and the student team from Seattle Central Community College was showing it at their meeting on this very same evening. Members can expect to see more of the new website unveiled at the January 2014 SEVA meeting.

SEVA CALENDARS ARE OUT – Get your 2014 Calendar today only $15-

TURNING UP THE HEAT – President Stephen also demonstrated his project to put an in-dash car heater into his EV in an informative slideshow.

EVs ARE COMING OUT ALL OVER! – Stephen also shared some pictures taken at very busy charging stations at Bellevue Square mall where on a random day he witnessed two 2013 Toyota Rav4EVs, one Chevy Volt and a Nissan LEAF all using the garage's Chargepoint stations.

JEFF FINN – Awarded Stephen Johnsen his official badge as president of SEVA. Jeff also shared an overview of the legislative issues of the day, including information about a recent meeting with Frank Chopp. To make many things on SEVA’s “wish list” come true is going to have to hinge on getting legislative sponsorship. If you are in Representative Frockt's legislative district you are encouraged to ask him to sponsor a bill regarding HOV lane access for EVs.
THE IBEW SPEAKS – a professional lobbyist for the IBEW, Nicole Grant, expressed her support for SEVA’s legislative goals in Olympia.

IT’S “MY EV” – Steven Lough shared a letter he wrote to Mitsubishi about the pronouncing the name of their car.

Mark Yormark mentioned that EAA is looking for board members on the national level. Give it some thought. It’s nice to have a lot of subject matter experts, but an organization runs best when it’s run by people who have business and organizational experience.

RAFFLE – Congratulations to the winner our very own Chuck Benson! REMEMBER TO JOIN US NEXT MONTH AT THE JANUARY 14th, 2014 SEVA MEETING TO GIVE YOUR INPUT AS TO HOW YOU WANT TO SEE SEVA CONDUCT MEETINGS AND BUSINESS! Happy Holidays! Stephen Johnsen SEVA President With special thanks to our secretary Kevin Boze for his detailed meeting minutes.
24.18.255.87
