SEVA Meeting Minutes: April 8, 2014, –Called to order. Officers introduced. 34 persons in attendance.

1. RECAP OF EVENTS – TRED event held. Many people attended TRED “virtually,”
NORTH SOUND EAA MEETING in Mount Vernon had
a “surprising” number of attendees, thus launching a new EAA chapter. SIERRA CLUB had an
event at Bastyr College, rated a “great success” by those present. WILD HORSE WIND FARM
held an event, which has 50-amp outlets available for charging. The wind farm is also available
for tours! EASTSIDE EXPLORATORY MEETING had more than 30 attendees, sharing lots of
information and ideas about how EV advocates might form their own presence in the Issaquah
area.

2. SEVA SERVER CRASH – About three weeks ago, SEVA’s crash resulted in our website going
away, and disrupting the email list. If you haven’t heard from SEVA lately, that’s the
problem. It is being repaired. If you are not on the email list, send a note to our President at
hpev.llc@gmail.com and he will personally add you. You can Google “SEVA Email List” as well to
find the Google Group or visit this link directly: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/seva_list

3. UPCOMING EVENTS – Earth Day is coming up on Saturday, April 19th
Newcastle event at Lake Boren Park. There are many events in connection with Earth Day,
and it semi-officially kicks off “Car Show Season”. You are encouraged to check out the event
calendar online for all the newest information.

4. XXX ROOT BEER ALL-ELECTRIC SHOW – May 11th This is going to be our big chance to show
our stuff at one of the premier car-show locations in Washington State. It is very important that we
have an accurate count of people who want to show cars or attend, so please register your car

5. LEGISLATIVE NEWS – There is a national effort to pressure New Jersey to reverse its stance and
allow Tesla to continue to do business in that state. SEVA has a new Legislative Issues Coordinator, John McCoy.
Many thanks to Jeff Finn who previously held that position and has done so much for SEVA and EVs in
Washington State! John McCoy announced that he is going to Olympia this Thursday April 10, to support
a potential $600 rebate that Pugest Sound Energy would offer customers who install EVSE!

6. BMW E3 ON THE SCENE! Pat shared the information on the conversion project done
by his students. The 2001 BMW that resulted was gleaming out in the parking lot for the membership
to see and is one of the fanciest conversions around. Well done!
Pat’s goal is to break the High School drag race record.

The VOTE was taken to RETURN to the Church behind Dicks Drive IN.

Yesterday I was run through the New Procedures.

The official address is: Church of the Nazarene
44th St. NE and 2nd Ave. NE

The Parking lot is ours to FILL UP with Electric Cars.

However... You are Urged to Pass Through the Mosaic Coffee House BEFORE attending the meeting. For the Donations Box, is the only way we PAY for the Hall. Tim the manager has said, we used to have a larger donation when we were just 30 or so meeting in the room down stairs. When our meetings became 50, 60 70... Donations dropped OFF. So he has urged us to patronize the Coffee House, and donate what you can.

Also,
I will need Volunteers to help set up Tables and Chairs before 7 pm. And then put every thing away before leaving and locking up the building.

Please if you KNOW folks who do not receive the SEVA E-Mail, please Call Them and let them know of our Return to the 44th St. Location.

I will POST this announcement on the church at 60th St. NE. Just in case....

* If you are ever in Wenatchee , the community college has a couple of dedicated charging spots at their auto shop. WVC is also installing charging stations in their new parking lot in front of the new Allied Health building

* Other Friday Harbor charges: Also the Port of Friday Harbor has two official electric vehicle charging spaces at the top of the steps to the upper parking lot right next to the Friday Harbor Yacht Club.

* Everett charging: I have also stopped for emergency charging at Pacific Power Batteries http://www.pacificpowerbatteries.com 3729 Broadway, Everett, 98201 - (425) 259-9260

* Edmonds charging: There is an available plug next to a disabled parking space in the back parking lot of my office in Edmonds at 512 Bell Street, which is available almost any time to SEVA members. 425-712-8318.

* Other Seattle charges: The Downtown Seattle Public Library DOES have "unofficial" 110-v plugs: there are at least six plugs in the wall near several spaces. I can usually find a way to charge up there. I don't mind the parking rates as long as I can charge up.

Here is WA states draft of what they plan to do for climate change. It's open for public comment until Jan 10th, so if we want to suggest anything we better get going. It's a long document and they have mentioned PHEV's, but not pure EV's. I don't know if it is possible to convince them to make a bigger push for EV's, but they could really cut GHG emissions by pushing this area. They also are looking to reduce foreign oil imports which EV's can accoplish, especially with our hydro power availability.

Are we going to comment as a group or individually, or both? Only 10% PHEV's by 2020 means the world is in for deep trouble IMHO.

Below are some excerpts from the overall general plan which includes PHEV's:
:All five of the TWG (technical working group) sectors present significant opportunities for emissions reductions and removals, as shown in Figure 5. Some highlights are outlined here, and more discussion is provided in Section V. Not surprisingly, the transportation sector, which accounts for nearly half the State’s emissions, offers significant emissions reduction potential through increasing vehicle and transportation system efficiency, and reducing vehicle travel from transit, community design, and other measures. Alternative vehicle fuels can also play a major role in the transportation sector by 2020, through a low carbon fuel standard and ''plug-in hybrid electric vehicle incentives'', as well as through the agriculture and forestry sector, where the CAT recommends goals for producing 250 million gallons of liquid fuels from biomass by 2020. Another major contributor to potential emissions savings in the agriculture and forestry sectors by 2020 is avoiding the conversion of farm and forest lands, and the resulting loss of carbon stored in trees and soil. Expanding recycling, reuse, and source reduction of municipal waste accounts for about half the emissions reductions in the agriculture/waste column shown. Improvements in building energy efficiency and community design, increasing natural gas efficiency programs, and increasing efficiency standards account for a significant fraction of the emissions reduction shown for the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. In the energy supply sector, increasing the contribution of renewable and combined heat and power sources are the principal sources of quantified emission reductions shown.

Again.. the turn out Tuesday night was phenomenal. Wall to wall people. Standing room only. But what is even more exciting, is the percentage of New Folks.

Daniele Buckey and Martin Martinez from Alternate Current, a new Alt. Energy store on University Way.
Roland Pete Peterson from Mobil Electronics Corp.. bunching A123 Li-Ion batteries in packs for model airplanes OR OTHER uses. Danial Davids, new owner of a Rav4-EV, and Craig Vinton who has just acquired an S10 EV , and a whole hand full of folks who are interested in learning who WE are and how we can help them Build a Commuting EV.

Then I had to speak ONE more Time about the treatment of SEVA by KUOW radio. Nuff said. The it was on to the overwhelming number of invitations we have received to show our stuff, to speak, to “Educate – Demonstrate – and Proliferate"… Here below is a brief synopsis:

March 28th – Meet with King County Exec. Ron Sims on the subject of EVs and PHEVs

April 21st – The CCEJ ( Community Coalition for Environmental Justice) wishes our involvement.

May 5th - Lacy WA. Alt Fuel Festival and Electrathon Races.

September – Hot Autumn Nights – Edmonds.

And this MAY not be the only invitations which will surface… I know we can not do them ALL. But REMEMBER ! Individuals are Welcome and Encouraged to participate on their own, if they can, as long as we know your intentions a head of time, and you carry the SEVA message, in good taste.

Other News – Last months meeting in Everett was what I thought a rousing success, especially the involvement of all the college students from the Everett area. However when asked, the membership, all people present, had not been contacted by any one from up north.

Stephen Bergheim continues to fight for some ON-STREET charging for Eves in down town Edmonds.
Paul Playhouse, and Stephen Johnson spoke on various plans to install surplus GM Magnachargers round the Tacoma-Seattle-Everett corridor. A reminder here… OUR SEVA web site has a link to a very useful
LIST of Charging points in the Puget Sound area. It is set up for automatic and self directed additions.

We spoke of the Passage, 97 to 0, of House Bill 1820 in the State house this month. Good News, but we still have to write, call, and lobby our Senators now… to have an equal victory in the Senate.

Stewart Isett was a guest at the Meeting. He is a Reporter/Photographer with an assignment from his Over Seas Magazine to take pictures of all the EV activity in our area. Dave Cloud reported on his on-going plans to build an “affordable” Hybrid Kit for Geo Metros, using a mid-size electric motor with sturdy belt drive to act as starter, and as electric aid to forward motion. He brought one of the PM Motors he plans to use. He has a surplus of them.. 17 to be exact, at $295 each ( I think)

Rich Rudmand brought us up to date on PHEV work. He now has 3 Prii under his belt, with Kent’s Prius in production with Li-Ion batteries, and two more in the wings. One for Green Car Co. of Kirkland, and another from a Florida customer, Shawn Wagner.

February 13th Meeting

If you were not there, it would be hard to believe what a wonderful and vibrant meeting it was.
Rain, and a horrific accident north of Everett, causing miles and miles of grid-lock could not stop a record turn out.
A very special Big SEVA Thanks to Steve Ahmann and his Pacific Power Batteries crew. Especially the
inclusion of folks from Everett Community College, most notably Ms. Jamie Curtismith, head of Business Education. She will be following through with Eric Davashaul in the Engineering school. The connection could not be more appropriate. Chances are that folks from SEVA and people from ECC will be collaborating on EV courses, and some EV improvements on their Geo Metro Electric soon.

I counted almost 40 people. There was standing room only in Ahmann’s big Battery Warehouse. But what better place to have an EV Meeting than being surrounded by thousands of Storage Batteries.

Jason Henderson, had an EV Grin from ear to ear, while driving his new EV Saturn sedan all the way up from Dave Clouds skunk-works. They received a good re-charge thanks to Pacific Power Battery, and made the return trip with out a hitch. Dave’s work was admired by all the members and students. Rich Rudman's PFC charger supplied the DC Amps.

Paul Peavyhouse with help from Stephen Johnson, drove his Chev GM S10 Electric Pick up to the meeting also.
Had a little trouble keeping the 240 V Breaker engaged. Seems the Magnacharger wanted to suck more Amps than the circuit was happy with.

New members were too numerous to count here. The Community College Students, Friends of Pacific Power, folks in and around Everett which would find it difficult to drive all the way to Seattle, came out of the wood work to join us.

Today, Wednesday 2/14/07, Valentines day, folks from SEVA and MC Electric are returning to Olympia to testify on House Bill 1820, which if passed and signed will allow appropriate NEV’s to attain speeds of 35 mph on local roads and streets, in stead of the limiting 25 mph currently the LAW.

The Meeting was so CHARGED, that several announcements slipped passed me. Things I should have announced are: We will be meeting with the Young Democrats Group at the UW on Feb 21st Wednesday evening. Also on the 22nd, there will be another FREE showing of “Who Killed the Electric Car” at the community center at Camp Long in West Seattle.

I know I have probably not made note of all the news worth printing. So I invite any and all of you to add your two watts if you wish.

Next months meeting, March 13th, will again be at Chuck Benson’s house unless posted otherwise. I have commissioned Chuck to look into larger meeting places round the area, for it seems SEVA is Growing.

making them more marketable, with a top speed of 35
in stead of the very limited 25 mph !
WHY:WHERE AS, the popularization and utilization of Electric Vehicles (EVs)
Can drastically reduce our dependence on foreign Oil.

WHERE AS, the efficiency of an EV is 4 to 5 times that of petrol driven
Internal combustion vehicles per dollar of energy.

WHERE AS, the pollution per mile of an EV is much less than an Internal
Combustion Engines, using any and all known fuels, even if the electricity is derived from Coal Fired electric generation, and MANY times cleaner when derived from hydro, or renewable energy
like wind and solar.

WHERE AS, Neighborhood Electric Vehicles, (NEV’s) cost less, and are more
available than most free-way certified EV’s, Hybrids and yet to be available Plug-In Hybrids.

WHERE AS, most urban automobile trips are within the range per charge
of most NEV's and other EV’s.

WHERE AS, the Department of Energy has determined that existing available electric energy in the National Grid, could power
80% of today’s vehicles if recharged during OFF-PEAK periods.

WHERE AS, the present federal and state category of “low speed Electric Vehicles” limits their arterial road speed to 25 m.p.h. which
greatly inhibits their marketability.

WHERE AS, other vehicle types, which do not go through crash testing,
Roll-over testing, and implementation of Air Bags ARE allowed no speed restrictions, such as motor cycles, and
Certain 3-wheel vehicles..

NOW, THEREFORE,
The Board of Directors and Members of the Seattle EV Association, strongly urge passage of House Bill 1820, which when passed will change local NEV Regulations to allow them to attain speeds of 30 to 35 miles per hour on appropriate streets and arterials, but limit their use to local and state controlled streets, and their exclusion from Federal Highways will remain.. We further more urge citizens to contact their
Local and state legislators and individually urge passage of HB 1820.

It's official! The FlexCar chapter in Seattle, is giving special membership and discounts to any one in the Seattle EV Association driving/owning an Electric Vehicle or a Neighborhood EV!

I think this is a marriage made in EV Heaven. Here is how it works.
An EV owner/user signs up, takes a $50 discount, and drives to any one of many FlexCar parking lots round Seattle. Park your EV, pick up your Honda, or even a few Honda Hybrids, and drive your 50 100 150 mile trip.
Some FlexCar pick-up points will even allow you to charge your 20 to 40 mile/per/charge EV while you make your 100, 200 mile trip.

I know there are other FlexCar outlets in Portland OR. and I think
San Francisco too. Our local manager, Tracy Carroll, one of the original FlexCar founders, should spread the concept to their other outlets.

I am presenting a resolution to the Edmonds City Council this month to do two things:
one, to support "plug-in" hybrids (I call them "gas optional" (GO) hybrids"); and
second, TO INSTALL ELECTRIC PLUGS FOR CHARGING IN THE CITY STREETS!!!

I have heard that the proposal would be more popular if I can bring people to testify that having electric plugs would encourage them to drive to Edmonds to shop and dine.

Would any SEVA-activists come to Edmonds on a Tuesday night to testify in support of public plugs for charging?

If "yes," you can charge at my house or my office, both nearby.

I know I ALWAYS say we had a Great Meeting. But WE DID !!!

I especially enjoy milling around the various break-out groups which form around various factions after the main business of introductions and monthly business are done. EV racing here, Battery Management there. And on and on…

We had over 20 folks show up on this cold January night. I think it was over 5 folks were relatively new comers. Thanks William, James, Leonard, Greg, and Livia..

The new GM Chevy VOLT took up a lot of discussion. Some hopeful, some saying it was just another GM Promise which will not be fulfilled.

Our club has been invited to hold its next meeting ( Feb 13 ) at Pacific Power Battery in Everett, thanks to their CEO – Steve Ahmann. Formal approval to follow, but our membership voted A-OK. Steve is close to the Jr. Colleges up north, and sees SEVA helping with the teaching and the preaching for Electric Cars. I’ve already volunteered. We will let you know of our change of venue is a GO.

Stephen Bernheim, our member with the yellow Sparrow, is active in city politics in Edmonds and if all goes well, will be putting forward a proposal for PHEV’s on Jan. 23rd. He would like any SEVA members who can make it to come and testify. My hat is in the Ring.. Details to follow.

I reported on a wonderful phone conversation I had Monday Evening with Ron Freund, the Chairman of the Board for the Electric Auto Association. He’s a great guy, doing wonderful volunteer work at the National Level for us all. He encourages any and all members who can afford the trip to fly out to Florida on the 26th and 27th for the 6th annual EAA National Conference of Chapters, and to take in the Electric Drag Races “Battery Beach Burnout” Check out the Florida Chapter Web Site for details

As you know our member Dave Cloud has done dozens of Geo Metro conversions. All with just a few metric wrenches. He is now doing an older Saturn sedan, and he says there is a terrible mixture of SAE and Metric, which has added DAYS to the conversion process. So “Converters be Ware” If your going to do a Saturn, have several sets of wrenches and sockets…

Many stories about batteries and inverters and generators saving the Day during our big wind storm.

Rich Rudmand and John Lussmyer both made it over to the meeting from the West side of the Pond.
Rich is trying to catch up on Charger and Bat.Regulator orders, while simultaneously working on Toyota Prius PHEV # 4 for our very own Kent Bakke and a very nice SET of Li-Ion Batteries.
This is a conversion we would all like to have…

And also our Sec.Tres John Frost for getting it all together for the 2007 SEVA Calendars, even though most of the photographs had to come from non-members this year for lack of input… And on this one, I am as guilty as the next person… Perhaps at Gasless on Greenwood 2007
I can shoot at least 10 or 12 High Res pictures for the 2008 calendar…

We would be delighted to have an electric vehicle or two on display at the Rolling Thunder Festival. If you just want park the vehicles we will try and find a space either at the front gate parking lot or along the access road inside the festival. If you plan on sticking by the cars and talking to people, you may want to bring a canopy or some sun protection. I will be at the front gate checking in tablers. You can ask for me.

Directions:
Driving North on Sand Point Way NE, take the NE 74th St entrance into Magnuson Park and look for the signs. We will be on the playfield just about a block into the park, on the right.

Other Information for Tablers:
* Tablers are expected to provide their own tables, chairs, display setup and other needed items. Electricity will not be available.
* Tablers should arrive between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Official start time for the festival is noon.
* Tabling will end at 5 p.m. with tear down no later than 9 p.m.
* Two people per table will be admitted free.
* The cost per table is $25. Please bring a check made out to Seattle Thunder to the event.

Steves Post on the EVent:

First I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to Mark, of MC Electric for
spending his whole Saturday in the HOT SUN with me. It would have been
quite an EV disaster with out him and his blue canopy, for all I had
brought was a small picnic table umbrella. The vehicle he brought, a
green mini-Hummer Look-Alike NEV, was quite a HIT with the folks too.
I dreamed up the phrase, " This Hummer really HUMMMMMMSS.... "

I thought the general public turn out was shy for all the effort and
some 2 dozen booths, and displays which everyone put into the event.

Ed Bagley Jr. was very gracious. (SEE OUR PICTURE ) and I was able to
give him a quick run down of what SEVA had been doing the last 25 years.

His speech before the whole gathering was on sustainable simplicity,
and... " If you can not afford to do a complete solar house, or buy an
Electric Car, at least do what you can afford. Pick the low hanging
fruit. Buy some compact fluorescent bulbs. Ride the Bus, buy a
bicycle.. Don't give UP. Progress is being made. There are 4 times
more cars in LA county than 20 years ago, yet Ozone emissions are HALF"
Of course he spoke very highly of Electric Vehicles over and over again.
I am going to try and find his e-mail address so we can keep in contact.

Don 'Father Time' Crabtree had a build party for the ZEV-Recliner races.
Food was very abundant, but SEVA folks were not. ( unfortunately ) There was Father Time, Steve Lough , Ryan Fulcher, and Dave Barden. Enough folks to get some quality EV Building going, but not enough to eat all the chicken, baked beans, potato salad, brownies, etc. Below are some pictures of the Progress:
