I have a Zap Xebra that I am upgrading from 72V to 108V. When I need additional range, I am going to carry a 4.8kw generator that mounts to the back of the car. My limited understanding is that I'm looking for a rectifier and controls. My question is, specifically, what components am I looking for?

You need to do some studying first.
Look up rectification in Wikipedia then go for single phase vs 3 phase rectification. 
Then look up power factor in wiki. 
I think after this you will find it is just not that easy and will probably need a bigger alternator.
