Have had the same thoughts regarding converting riding mowers.
Have given some thought on how to drive attachments ie tillers etc etc maybe ithis is more appropriate to the "medium" size units ie 20 30 HP.
1 acre??  Gang reel mower maybe?? 
Based on 10 HP gas you would need 5 HP motor.
Dont see too many dead mowers around Seattle
