An interesting method of generating electricity is starting to get some attention in the blogs, the Focus Fusion Reactor or Dense Plamsa reactor. It promises to bring cheap electricity to the masses, how cheap?
"A 5 MW Focus Fusion reactor may cost around $300,000 and produce electricity for 1/10th of a cent per kWh. This is fifty times less than current electric costs. Fuel costs will be negligible because a 5 MW plant will require only five pounds of fuel per year. "
So far government spending on the technology had been extremely small - $300K, so it's mostly an undeveloped theory, however it's based on well known and existing and even previously used technologies. And interesting difference is that it can generate the electricity directly, rather than indirectly as other power generation technologies, i.e., nuclear fusion generates heat which drives turbines which generate the electricity.
