View Larger Map The 2008 Greenwood Car Show folks are making Special Arrangements for us this year Space enough for 20 or more Electric Cars and vehicles. SEVA will be paying the first $15. and participating folks will send check or cash to SEVA for the remaining $10. ( $25. per vehicle total)

As before we will Que up in the parking lot at the very South End of Woodland Park at the foot of Whitman Ave. at 7 am. and drive to our NEW Secure EV Parking Lot. The exact address yet to be determined.

They are also working on EV Charging for us.

Update on "Gasless in Greenwood"

I managed to make contact with the renter that occupies the small building behind the Greenwood Cleaners and directly behind the parking lot which we will be using.  The map is updated and you can see the details at:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=106101835885297831085.00044dbf3730ec4f922f3&ll=47.689554,-122.355597&spn=0.000784,0.002604&t=h&z=19.  The funny part about the whole thing is that after talking with City Light they couldn't and wouldn't do any sort of power drop for us off the power pole on the corner.

It looks like we will be able to get 22 or more vehicles in this space and maybe more but there's no need to jam everyone together because I've got overflow parking directly on Greenwood Ave. just north of the parking lot. This will be a rare opportunity to show the people of Seattle what our organization is all about so this is what I propose:

I've started another post on the forum and I'd like everyone to respond over there rather than clog up the list server.  My goal is to PR this event around the world and show everyone that we are the ready to take on any challenge that any EV would require, so please bring your great karma and your digital cameras and shoot like crazy.  I would like to start a online Google spreadsheet using Google Docs (or anything else that's online) and enter everyone's vehicle and technical info which would include batteries, type of motor, and typical charging rate and time.  It will also need a number for each vehicle.

I will have at least 3 drops (1 220v, and 2 -110v) and I would like everyone to be fully charged and ready to go by the end of the show.  I don't know if this is possible but I think it is.  I also want to include the local people who live in the area and just because they don't need to recharge to get home, I still want them included.

So what I need is someone to to the calcs, that means figuring out the entire load and time to recharge everyone there, which of course requires all of everyone's info to do the math, hence the spreadsheet.  I will need two "chargemasters" and one timer.  The chargemasters will take care of the physical connections between the drops and each vehicle and the timer will monitor how long each vehicle is charging and then call for the change (vehicle #6 next etc.).  This exercise will require quite a bit of coordination between everyone there because Steven Lough will be spending most of his time talking to everyone out front.

I also want everyone to wear a name tag with their car number and "name of their car" on it.  These can be printed out in duplicate and also attached to the windshield of each vehicle.  It would also be nice to have a detailed description of your car printed out in 8 1/2" x 11 paper that is clearly visible for everyone to read.

If possible I'd also like erect at least 2 -10'x10' popup canopies that we can put in the middle row to create our own SEVA "Electric City", just in case the weather doesn't cooperate and we need to keep the chargers under cover.  The weather forecast as of today predicts a high of 78 and zero percent change of precip but we'll still too far away to be guaranteed of anything.  If the weather does cooperate the place will be crawling with people and we'll be right in the middle of it, so get ready, get amped, and get ready to go "Gasless on Greenwood".

Dave, I'm so glad there will be a 220V feed! This will enable some of us who are coming from far away and also allow for more vehicles to charge since it will take less time!  Thank you for all you are doing to make this happen.  I can bring some large 8/4 and 6/4 extension cords for the 220.

[snip]

From the bottom up <g>

I don't think enough power is available to charge all the EVs that will be there. We also need to be very careful about having extension cords running all around - they are a trip hazard (and they don't look "cool".) The EVs most needing a charge should be near the available power and plugged in. Vehicles more to the center or on Greenwood Ave. shouldn't be plugged in unless the cord can be run safely and discretely. My car would take hours to charge as the onboard charger is a 2 amp 10 bank Deltran charger. I won't need a charge as I will arriving to the show from the Woodland Park Zoo south parking area.

Since this is a timely matter for SEVA I feel that the list *needs* to be "clogged up" with Greenwood show chatter. It  needs to be kept at the front of everyones mind right now - its ONE week away. Not everyone uses this forum (in fact, few do right now.)

I have just returned from visiting the parking area. It might fit 22 cars in a tight parking arrangement, but not for viewing purposes. The lot would best hold 10 to 14 cars with room to walk around them. We will need to spill over into the street (which is good!)

Paul or anyone else who may need a charge...   I'm bringing my pfc20, it has an Anderson 50amp connector.  I also have some pigtails for the other end.

I'm going to swing by this afternoon and see if I can scope out the 220v power source.  Desmo dave reports on the map that there will be  drops available from the realty next door.  what voltage?  on different circuts?  Are these in addition to the drops from the bldg behind the dry cleaner?

it looks to me like extension cords can be routed behind the cars and not cause a hazard for anyone.
I couldn't tell where the 220v supply was and there was no one around to ask.

Dave do you know what type of plug the 220v is?

it looks like a good spot it rises to the rear from the street so cars parked in back will still be visible from the street.

I think cars that won't be needing a charge should be parked either on the street or in the parking slots that won't have power.   Can we get a count of people who absolutely must be charged?

Hello to All,

I'm looking forward to this weekend's 'Gasless in Seattle' at the Greenwood car show this year! Thanks to towing help from Jim 'Motor Dog' Husted, I will have my pair of '72 Datsun 1200s there.

It's been a rough start for 2008 around here, but ...finally...things are back on the front burner. I am currently working on four separate EV projects...the 2008 lithium-powered 10 second 100+ mile range per charge White Zombie, the reborn Blue Meanie, a late 90's Honda Civic conversion, and perhaps the most exciting of them all, a 200 mile per charge lithium polymer powered 2002 Nissan Altima, with AC drive.

Since this is my first post to this new forum, I'll keep it focussed on just one of my projects, the reborn Blue Meanie.

Blue Meanie has been dormant for a while, but as of today, it is now back on line. This car as always been about fun and changing the perception that all EVs are slow, dull, and boring. In addition to its clean appearance and nice sound system, the main focus has always been on spirited acceleration and handling, with range-per-charge being less important. With only 585 lbs. of lead acid batteries (13 Optima YTs - later changed to 13 Exide Orbitals) range was just 'OK' at 25 miles with a 100% discharge, though considering such a light pack, that's actually pretty good. The drive system/battery pack had been at 156V for about 10 years, but the latest redesign is now at 168V, raising the battery count from 13 to 14. Stout Hawker Genesis (OK, they're now called Enersys) EX60 12V batteries replace the Optima/Orbital types, and they are a bit larger, ~ 5 lbs. heavier, and can safely belt out BIG amps.

This time around, range is dramatically improved, while at the same time, performance has also been ratcheted up a notch :-) The new battery pack is now at a heftier 693 lbs. vs the old 585 lb. Optima based pack. The Hawker Genesis EX60 12V battery is rated for 47 ahr @ C1 of capacity for ~ 8 kwhrs @ 100% discharge, and 6.4 kwhrs at 80% DOD. Blue Meanie only needs ~ 8-9 kw to cruise at 55 mph, and only 7 kw to run along at 45 mph. I'm thinking that while keeping discharges to 80% max, range will be ~ 35-40 miles @ 80% DOD. The Genesis XE60 is also rated at 400 cycles at 100% DOD, far greater than the Optimas were at ~ 280 cycles. Keeping max discharges to 80%, the cycle life really improves, of course. Though the new pack is 108 lbs. heavier, it's elevated voltage and low sag at high discharge currents raises the car's hp even higher to an estimated 150 hp.

It was quite a bit of work cramming 14 bigger batteries into a tiny car already well-stuffed with 13 smaller ones! All new brackets, compartments, and hold-downs were designed, built, and installed, with the biggest project being how to fit 8 bigger batteries where 7 smaller ones once were in the motorized rear battery compartment! We did it though, and it turned out great.

OK, that's it for now. I'm looking forward to seeing new faces, but at the same time, it will be great to meet up with old friends, too.

Out of the 30 entries, It would be Very Important for us to know, who absolutely NEED  to CHARGE while at the Show.  As I look over my Master List, I see a possible 4 to 6 folks.  With perhaps a few others who would if they could, just to TOP OFF.

Chuck Benson has offered his house, on Thachary Street. And there is the Charging Map, also.

Please Check in with us.   I will POST this to the e-mail list as well.

Gasless Participants.....

( I know, I already sent this message, but This is the only way I know to make sure every one knows)

It has come to our attention, that SPACE is really tight, at our designated Special Area,( 83rd and Greenwood - West side of street)
and it might behoove us to be ON THE MOVE no later than 7 am.

2nd Amendment:

If you are coming from the far north, and do not have to Park a Trailer, you can just MEET US at Our Special Area, rather than going to the far South Side of Woodland Pk.  In other words, straight to the parking Lot at 83rd, and Greenwood ( just north of the Dry Cleaners..) You will have to come in from the West Side of Greenwood.  Suggest going west on 85th, take the first left... go down two blocks to 83rd, go East, and then into the parking lot.  When the Main Group comes, we may have to do a bunch of jockeying to fit everyone, in a nice display....

So...  I am MOVING up the time for Coffee and Donuts to 6:30, and hope that we can all be READY to MOVE by 7 am...

Dave Bardon and I spent some time at the sight.  There is an ally way behind the Cleaners ( at 83rd.) and the fence separating the ally from our Parking can be moved, so we can get IN to the lot, either from
83rd, or from Greenwood, or from the alley way...  Which is very GOOD

For those NOT YET REGISTERED...  Come to the Parking lot, we will go in MASS, and catch up with registration   ....After the FACT...

I am going to repeat this message every day, for the next few days, in hopes that every one will be able to Catch the Shift in Meet-Up-Time.
