Hi,

Has anyone had any luck convincing a condo board to let them install even a standard house current plug in a garage?  I was makng some headway at my HOA meeting last night, when one board member strongly objected to the idea, even if just to run a maintenance charger for a motorcycle.  He's an architect who has designed EV charging stations, and says it can't be done because of the lack of ventilation.  He suggested I take my motorcycle battery up to my unit to charge.  If the hydrogen off-gassing is an issue in the garage, I'm not sure I want it in my unit, and if I get an EV, it will be out of the question to pull the battery out to charge in my studio.  I'm sure lithium would be seen as a fire hazard, as well, so I don't know if choice of battery chemistry is relevant.

He has some strong points to consider for the EV, I don't know if there is any way to address the ventilation, fire, and liability concerns.  Do any of you charge an EV in an underground garage where you live, and, if so, how have you dealt with these issues?  I would consider an electric motorcycle or three-wheeler if I could overcome these objections.

Thanks,

Paul in Roosevelt

I have charged my Ford Ranger EV in an underground garage at my condo, but it uses NiMH batteries so there is no outgassing. Also, I haven't talked to the HOA about installing a permanent charger so I just have a 100 Ft extension I run from my 2nd story window down to the garage, definitely not the best solution, as they complain if I leave it out during the day. So in other words, I just skirt around the issue, rather than have a real solution.
