January 10th Meeting
Considering we were in the middle of the worst Monsoon, since the 70’s we had a Really fantastic turn out. 21 folks braved the rain and mud slides to attend.
Most notable, Dave Barden and his Honda 600 Electric drove to the meeting complete with A string of LED Christmas lights attached. Congratulations Dave. Great little car.
Great turn out from Steve Cloud’s shop, Father Time, Greg Wright, Roy LeMeur, and two new fellows Who I did not catch their names. Their Sunbeam Alpine conversion is UP-n-Running, which will soon Be delivered to their customer, and with several other conversions in the pipeline, they are Busy folks. Their OFFICIAL name has been changed to Electric Vehicles USA, Inc.
Steve Lough spoke on meeting up with folks from the Port of Chelan County in Wenatchee and their Firm desire to become involved with EVs or Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. Ron Johnston-Rodriguez, the Economic Development Director was in Seattle and met up with Steve earlier this month for dinner And conversation. This was all started when Felix Kramer of CalCars.org visited Seattle back in November.
Bruce Sherry gave a very informative talk on the new generation of Redmond Regulators MK3. They communicate with each and every battery in a string, and can adjust the Main Charger accordingly, Thereby giving each and every battery their due-charge. Estimated price – Between $75 - $100. ea.
Roy LeMeur reported on the 62 Chevy on Monster Garage, and some more detail on the Li-Ion batteries from Milwaukee Tool, that were used…. All 384 of them. Seems they have a miniature controller built into the battery module, limiting the output current to 30 Amps. For the race car, those modules were modified by Milwaukee Battery Engineers to put out 100 Amps per module. WOW ! Ryan Fulcher our Web Guy, has purchased 2 modules ( in the most economical way possible, which is to purchase a 28V. Flash Light/battery/charger combo for $200. ) He is going to experiment with them on one of his scooters.
Steve had a request to elaborate on his trip to Canada. Obviously at the Wonderful Christmas SEVA Party, hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Mark Dodril…. Most attention was given to the Monster Garage Project As it well should have been. But a lot of what went on in Vancouver was given a short shrift. Now as a month has passed, the memory fades… Steven feels that the Club is right to expect to get more detail for their generous donation to the cause. In 40 words or Less… the most significant factor is just that we were there, represented, and believe me… When it came to questions HARD questions, Steven’s HAND was UP, and UP again…recognized. To such a point as to get comments from the head of GEM/Chrysler….” I appreciate the questions you have been asking “ Now THAT alone is worth the $900. Steven spent out of his own pocket !! The Bottom Line, is this…. Gas and Diesel and even Gas Hybrids, are not going to stem the Tide of World Demand for OIL. It has to be augmented By Renewable energy, and BEV’s or PHEV’s…. And hearing THAT from the likes of all the Big Shots at this meeting is GOOD NEWS…..
Dave Cloud had an interesting presentation on a mechanical Parallel/Series Master Switch ….Sprung Loaded, and ready to go into his highly modified Geo-Metro-Fast-back.. He also mentioned that he has completed yet another TWO conversion for retail customers this last month. Wow…
Ryan Fulcher talked eloquently on the subject of PHEV’s and CalCars. There are technical papers and Schematics forthcoming, and with our special sub-page at our SEVA web site, will ……for sure Be POSTING the results, for all the folks who want to modify their Gen 2 Prius’ss’s’s’s’s’
Now ON to 2006… The big Rod and Custom Car show on Greenwood Av. Is a slam-dunk. I put in another PLUG for paying attention to New-bees folks Wanting to get out of their gas Cars, but not much knowledge about what it takes. Several folks from Cloud EV… Said “A-man”
Steve got a few seconds of Glory on NPR Radio again last month. There was a call in program of..."What was the Best and Worst of 2005 for YOU" Well, I got my LICKS in for the EV Chair race, where we beat Craig McKaw, and our trip to the EV Convention in Vancouver BC. FWIW
With out knowing otherwise, the next meeting will be again at Chuck’s house… Till then..
Happy New Year…..
