January 11th 2011 Meeting

Almost 50 folks showed up. And we had a nice full meeting agenda.

From the TOP: We will be losing our Secretary/Treasurer John Frost to a PROMOTION where he works.. This is going to FORCE the elections I have been talking about for months.

Chuck Bensen has said he could accept nomination for Treasurer. The only criteria, good record keeping, being able to balance a check book, write invoices to the EAA for reimbursement once in a while, etc.

Secretary is OPEN ( help !! ) some one who can make most every meeting, and be able to sit down the Day After for 20 or 30 minutes and write something approximating what you are now reading.. ( with less typos and SP's ... LOL;-)

Vice President should be some one similar in temperament and speaking skills as my self. Able to accept everyone and any one willing to embrace Electric Transportation, to include Racing, EV Conversions, Commercially built EV's, Neighborhood EV's, E-bicycles, E-scooters, E-Lawn Mowers, Technology and engineering, the Environmental aspects and our partners there-in, and the political aspects, and try and keep everyone happy and engaged. I Nominate Stephen Johnsen !!

And I guess, if any one has thoughts of the Presidency ! ??

John Frost also added that our 2011 calendars are done, and should be available for purchase at the Feb. meeting.

We discussed Jeff Finn's work on the political and taxation front, and gave him many moments of praise. We hope that the State will heed our suggestions.

Tyler, one of our SEVA members let it be known that he may receive his LEAF later this month, meaning that I am sure he will be bringing it to the Feb. Meeting. Also on this note, I have contacted Jonathan H. the FIRST recipient in the state, who works for the Nature Conservancy, and invited him to be an honored speaker. He wrote back this a.m. and said he can not make the Feb. meeting but may be able to come in March.

Dave Barden was chosen to "review" a book all about the making of the VOLT. He was critical. Lots about the people and not so much about the car itself. A good "coffee table" book none the less. Lots of Pictures.

Speaking of BOOKS... Will the SEVA member who borrowed my copy of "CHARGE" get in touch with me so I can retrieve it ??

Bruce N. and Eric H. brought in a New and Improved version of their home-built pancake brush-less ac motor. SMOOTH all the way up to 4500 rpm. Pretty NEAT !!

Dave Cloud, not to settle on doing a 200 mile trip at freeway speeds in a HIGHLY modified tear drop Geo Metro with OLD lead batteries... told us about his NEXT project !! a ultra light 3 wheeler with room for two, freeway capable, with a goal of 300 miles on lead-acid and possible over 1000 at freeway speed, if he could obtain Lithium Sponsorship ! No doubt in my mind that he will some how reach his goals. More on this next month.

Stephen Johnsen had several great things to report. ONE... the 30 second "why I want a LEAF" he did at the big NISSAN Ride-N-Drive was the winner in the Seattle area, and he has a new TREK bicycle to show for it, and a chance at the National Finals !! We wish him LUCK. TWO: He is up for election as an EAA Board Member. All you EAA members... make sure you fill out your ballots ! THREE: He showed us all a fantastic YouTube video of our friend from So.Cal who has built a SUPER Electric Motorcycle, and went up against BIG GAS bikes last week, and came in 2nd. Chip Yates # 89 !! If you missed the video or my earlier e-mail you can catch it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIMQ0c7JKIU

Daniel Davaids, our very busy Plug-In-America President and Globe-Trotter, gave a great report on PIA's activities, and that more of those very entertaining PSA Videos ( Gas vs EV ) (PC vs MAC) commercials will be coming out soon. He has been very busy in Hawaii helping set up an EAA chapter, and participating in many EV-ents there.

Tom and Cathy Saxton gave a wonderful report on how they TORE apart their TESLA's Charging port and reconfigured it to accept a standard J1772 plug and power, thereby allowing them to use any and all public and private charging stations which will soon be UP and running. It was not easy. Much design work, CAD work, and precision computer driven machine work. They were published in the latest issue of Current EVents, the EAA magazine on this topic. They brought an excellent slide show showing the process, and cables and connectors for all to examine.

The talk of SNOW kept the body count down, and by 9 pm the streets were WHITE with the stuff. Not much depth, but still very dicey !! I found myself using our AWD family car in 4-wheel LOCK ( in stead of brakes) and saw lots of cars and busses out of commission on the short drive back to 32nd Ave.N.E.

I truly HOPE all who attended got home safe as well...

Till next time... as always, feel free to ADD to this amateur's attempt of being a "recording secretary" and send out an e-mail or EDIT or ADD to the copy on our Web Sight's meeting minutes.
