October 13th 2009 Meeting

Hello SEVA !!

So here we are again, to try and give you all who were not there, a sense of the October 13th SEVA meeting.

You know, we have been told that our EAA chapter is the Largest in the US !! I can believe it, for on a cold rainy October night, we still had over 60 people show up. While I am at it though, would be nice to hear from some of the OTHER 200 SEVA members who do not come to the meetings…

First, we were blessed to have as a guest speaker one Ms. Tonia Buell from the State of Washington Department of Transportation. Thanks to our Political guy Jeff Finn for arranging this. They had met at one of the many meetings which Jeff has been attending. Ms. Buell gave a very informative talk and slide show on what the State is doing to foster more EV’s and Alt. Fuel vehicles, and the Green Highway Initiative. Too little time and space to go into the whole presentation. For more info go to: partnerships@wsdod.wa.gov

We then had a brief review of several of the EV-ents over the last 30 days which members attended. To include the “Get Plug-In Ready” Workshop, the NISSAN Leaf presentation from Nissan officials, and the Puget Power EV show in Everett, and the Green EXPO at SSCC. All well worth our time to participate.

We were pleased to have brief presentations and Up-Dates from some of our commercial members, mainly Steve and Ray from MC-EV and their new products, Jim Schnitzius from Pacific EV on their new $4995. PHEV package for Toyota Prius’s, and Jim Morrison of EV Components on their very successful merger with Zilla Controllers, and Lithium battery importing. Suggest if you want more information on these folks to check out our “Local Resources” page at our SEVA Web Site.

Then turning to the near future, we talked of our presentation to SAE members on Oct 21st in Redmond, and the big Microsoft “Beyond Oil: The Sustainable Communities Initiative” We will have 8 members bringing EV’s and PHEV’s to show. Details at: http://www.discovery.org/e/991. The Registration fees are broken down to: $70. for all day Friday ( non-profit org), $65 for the Friday evening Dinner, and lastly $25. for the Saturday session. That’s a $160.total for the “Whole Enchilada” I encourage others to take in the two day conference. Fort Motor Co, will be bringing their all electric Ford Focus as well as their Plug-In Ford Escape. Also the NEW owners of the WaMu Building downtown have invited us to their Green Building Day on November 12th

Jeff Finn gave a brief report on political matters, and asked for volunteers to work on legislation for the 2009-2010 season. He also asked for ratification of the following declaration: “Because the Seattle Electric Vehicle Association (SEVA) 1. exists to encourage the creation and use of electric vehicles by the general public through a. education, b. demonstration, and c. proliferation by its members 2. members have a vast amount of experience owning, maintaining and driving electric vehicles used on the public roadways, provided significant input, support, and guidance in the creation and successful passage of House Bill 1481: Regarding Electric Vehicles, during the 2009 Washington State Legislative session;

SEVA membership unanimously supports Puget Sound Regional Council’s efforts to obtain the funds necessary to complete its responsibilities for planning for Electric Vehicles including the development of a model electric vehicle ordinance as assigned to PSRC without funding by the Washington State Legislature in Section 2 of HB 1481.”

It passed unanimously!!

ON Future Items: I forgot to mention….. We have been contacted by Sustainable West Seattle group which are organizing a multi-environmental group for a Christmas Party, on December 11th. Now that our core group is way above what could be hosted at anyone’s home… This might work out. They are looking for a $100 donation to off set refreshments, food, wine, beer, etc, and the rental of the Hall. Groups which are already ON Board include: Sustainable West Seattle, Northwest Eco building Guild, Solar Washington, and others. Could be FUN… Also get to network with other Enviro groups. More come November meeting.

Dave Cloud introduced one of his customers, who has to sell a recently converted Geo Metro. It’s a very good deal, if some one is looking for an EV. He also donated for auction an electric scooter, which went for $50 to one of our lucky members, and the money went to our treasury.

We took a VOTE on whether to return to the Church of the Nazarene/Mosaic on 44th behind Dicks Drive In on 45th, and looks like the November meeting will return there. We want to send a very warm “Thank You” to The folks at

Larry Gales gave a report on his Folding Electric Bike, and its strong and weak points. With Li-Ion batteries a little too heavy to pack up a flight of stairs, but plenty of POWER to bound up a good grade at more than 12 mph.

As always… I encourage any one who feels I have over looked something, to go to our web site and EDIT the minutes, or just send us all an e-mail UP-Date… Till Next month… Steve Lough
