== Never recharge your hybrid again; ==

I am a individual that had back in the 80's found a way to make the electric car that never needs to be recharged. I was very simple. Now that the oil problem is back again, some of the ideas that I submitted to the car makers is now showing up in the new hybrids. I checked with my co-inventor and he didn't file for a patent either. SO, if you would care to hear how easy this is to make what the makes are making now have unlimited mileage, contact me. thanks
: Feel free to share your ideas, I'm curious which of your ideas were used by the manufacturers in current hybrids? We actually want to plug in our hybrids (which we can not do currently without performing some [[PHEV]] modifications). As far as Electric Vehicles go, of course they plug in because electricity from the grid is their fuel source, we want more cars to use electricity instead of gas for their fuel. Either way you always need to "recharge" your car whether from an electric outlet or from a fuel pump at a gas station. --[[User:Rjf|Rjf]] 18:47, 19 July 2006 (CDT)

A '''conversion electric vehicle''' is a car which has been converted from an internal combustion engine (ICE) drive to an [[electric vehicle|electric propulsion drive vehicle]]. The conversion EV is the most widespread form of electric vehicle on the road today.

One reason the conversion is so popular among EV enthusiasts (aside from the relative lack of economical [[production electric vehicles]]) is the possibility of recycling an ICE car which has otherwise outlived its useful life. Another has to do with the fact that the [[scratchbuilt electric vehicle|scratchbuilt EV]] must incorporate the plethory of complex features normally available ready-made on a conversion candidate vehicle: the drive system, all of the mandated safety features, creature comforts, product design, and the frame itself.

Almost any small, compact ICE vehicle in good structural condition can form the basis for a successful EV conversion. The first step in the process is to remove all of the systems related solely to the gas powered engine drive system: the engine itself, the starter motor, the fuel tank, exhaust pipes, muffler, and cooling system (radiator).

The major components of the electric propulsion system consist of an [[electric motor]], [[batteries]], a [[charger]], and a [[controller]]. Additionally, various items of support hardware are required, including connectors (wiring), safety devices (fuses), monitoring devices, and interface hardware (such as the [[adaptor plate]]).

The items necessary for a conversion can be purchased separately or in kit form. In some cases, the kits which are available are specifically tailored to the type of vehicle. In any case, the component parts must work well together as a ''system''.

==Costs for a Sample Conversions==

In general, any small car can be converted / recycled to electric drive. Essentially all the complex systems such as the "exhaust system", "cooling system", "fuel delivery system", and motor are replaced with the following:

An advanced DC [[electric motor]] connected to the existing standard transmission via an [[adaptor plate]]. Motor $145O. Adaptor Plate $500.

Electronic transistorized [[controller]] (like a giant light dimmer) controls your power and speed. By Curtis-PMC $800.

[[Battery charger]], fully automatic. Plug it in and walk away for days without harm to the batteries. $400.

[[Batteries]], 10 - 12 volt, 0r 20 - 6 volt, deep cycle lead acid totaling 120 volts. Choice is one of maximum acceleration or maximum range. $950

On/Off power relays, h.d. fuses, h.d. connectors, battery cables, volt meter (measures pressure) and a ammeter (to measure to flow or use of the electricity) $900.

Total hardware $5,000 Assembly and labor (approximately 200 hours) $2,900.

Approximate grand total $7,900

Variables exist from car to car as to total labor. There are various upgrades available in equipment and instrumentation to customize the car to the customers liking. * Prices subject to changes without notice by suppliers.

Highlander: cat (EVs)

{{TOCright}}

If you have found your way here, you are half-way to energy efficient personal transportation. Give yourself a big eco-ego pat on the back.

Five things you should remember about electric cars:
* Efficiency - Electric vehicles (EVs) cannot carry as much energy as a fuel tank full of gas. For example the [[tzero]] has a very large capacity battery pack for an EV at 52 kwh, yet the Honda Insight's small 10 gallon gas tank is equal to well over 300 kwh. Thus EV's must be extremely efficient in order to make the best use of their limited fuel. This is why EVs commonly have a range of about 40 miles or so on just 10 kwh of energy.
* Industry Denial - Cars and trucks, and the oil industry which drives them, are this planet's single largest environmental problem, and there is pretty much a state of denial, even from environmentalists. Just look at the number of electric cars in the E.P.A. parking lot, or at Greenpeace, or the Sierra Club: ''Next to none!''
* Availability - Electric cars are available for anyone with the vision or desire to own one. Good used ones range in price from $2,900. New conversions from $8,900, plus a donor car. Remember, to convert a gas car to electric, is the highest form of recycling.
* Environmental Impact - Even if all our power came from coal and oil, (and it does not), because EVs are three times more efficient per dollar, we would have a net gain in air quality.
* Investing in Future - An electric car bought today, will only get better over time. WIthin the next 3 years, batteries will be available which will double and triple your per-charge-range.

==40 MILES A DAY==
From a psychological standpoint, the largest deterrent to wide spread electric car popularity is this ever present question of RANGE on a CHARGE. Today's electric cars, the affordable ones, not the dream machines from Detroit, can easily guarantee their owners a good solid 40 miles of range. These same cars can do 80 to 100 miles under the most ideal conditions of level road, warm day, steady 30 to 40 m.p.h. Now 40 miles may not sound like a lot, but in Seattle, and King County, the average daily miles traveled (average ..that is HALF OF ALL the cars) is probably less than 28 miles, and even in Los Angeles, it has been computed to be 38 miles a day. So if literally, half the planet earth is never driving over 40 miles a day, why can't half the planet be driving efficient, quiet, [[Pollution]] reducing electric cars ?? Go figure ?? As I said, it is a Psychological barrier.

==Largest Environmental Problem==
Far and away, the private automobile, and its INFRASTRUCTURE, is the single largest [[Pollution]], and environmental problem source on planet Earth. Think about it. From oil exploration, to drilling, to refining, to transport, oil spills, world politics and yes, even WAR. It's the WORST. If we were to set down today and dream up the internal combustion engine, cars, gas stations, etc. Etc. The world would revolt at the thought. And yet here we are. More oil leaks from crank cases of cars and trucks just on the road, and while parking than all the EXXON Valdese accidents annually. There are alternatives, if we have the courage to face up to our own selfishness. There is car pooling, public transportation, bicycles, telecommunications, and yes ELECTRIC CARS. It is also true that it can not be denied, that Geo-Politics is being driven by this countries "Thrust for Oil" and the control of it. Let us all hope and pray that reason will win out over greed.

==Cars are Available==
The talent, know-how, ingenuity, and willingness of a new and brave class of entrepreneur, stands ready to supply electric cars, in what ever shape, and what ever quantity the public would demand. And of course, Detroit, Tokyo, and Berlin would follow. How to make very affordable, and desirable electric cars exists. It is customers we need to increase sales, drive up production, and drive down cost. This is why the Clean Air Initiatives of California, New York, and Massachusetts states are so important. They are mandating that a small 2% of new car sales BE ELECTRIC starting in 1998. This is a guaranteed market, and have already brought costs down, and new technology UP. Too bad the Oil and Car lobbyists BROUGHT DOWN the California law, and put it off to a 10% mandate come 2003 !! A partial list where YOU can find an EV to buy, in your area, can be found under EVs FOR SALE, PARTS FOR SALE, OR EV INFO WANTED. Recently since 2000, hybrids built by Honda and Toyota have made good inroads into our transportation mix. Seattle and the Puget Sound area is said to be the 3rd highest urban area, second only to the Bay Area, and L.A. in Hybrid Car Registrations.

==Three times more Efficient==
Even in a modern fuel injected, computer driven automobile, for every dollar of fuel we purchase, 85 cents goes up in smoke and heat. That's RIGHT! We only get 15 cents on the dollar at the driving wheels. On the other hand, because of the efficiency of an electric motor, we receive about 55 cents of every charging dollar at the wheels. There are some losses in transmission of power, battery charging, etc. Because of this 3 fold advantage, electric cars make sense. Purpose built electric cars, like the cars which may come from the large auto makers later in this decade, will be even more efficient.

==Next 3 Years==
I want to give you a little peek over the horizon. In no way should this deter the millions and millions of motorists, who could drive electric cars for the last 10 years from buying one today. A gas car, once taken from the show room starts to deteriorate and literally wear out from the inside out, due to friction and heat, and constant up and down, in and out of the hundred of moving parts. On the other hand, a nice 2003 electric something, come 2005, or 2006 will get a new infusion of new tech. batteries, and the car will perform better than NEW. It will go farther, faster, and quicker, than originally advertised. One near term batteries to keep an eye on is the metal nickel hydride battery from Ovonic, of Troy Mich. The Ovonic Green battery is even twice as powerful as lead acid and uses less toxic materials. GM used them in their GM EV-1 Generation II.

Over the horizon just a bit further, there are lithium batteries , now being used and perfected in lap top computers and cell phones. It has been estimated that if the 800 so pounds of advanced metal nickel hydride batteries which can now power the GM EV-1 some 120 miles were to be replaced with lithium, that the range would triple to well over 300 !! .

The Big-7 auto makers are well under way developing Fuel Cell ELECTRIC Cars. The jury is still OUT on this path, compared to Battery Powered "Charge at Home" Electric Cars, for it is obvious to us, that IF Fuel Cell electric cars dominate, we will still be buying our "Fuel" from the likes of TEXACO, Shell, Standard Oil, BP and the like, al be it a cleaner more eco-friendly fuel. The overall efficiency is not quite as great as a pure battery powered car, but it IS twice or more efficient than internal (infernal) combustion engines. Sound like science fiction? Guess again, in Vancouver BC there are buses running daily, just as described, right now as you read this.
Electrathons are raced under rules which specify matters such as length and width of the vehicles (12 feet long and 4 feet wide maximum) and total weight of batteries (64 pounds for lead-acid batteries, a few more for gel cell battereis), with the weight of the drivers being ballasted to 180 pounds.. Other regulations concern safety features such as braking systems, roll bars, shut-off switches, etc.
Electrathon racing itself is a somewhat recent invention, first starting in Australia. The basic format is to determine which car can travel the furthest distance in one hours time within the limitations of battery weight and other factors mentioned above. The main design problem is posed by the fact that fast speeds drain the batteries rapidly resulting in the car not being able to continue in motion for the entire hour, so design teams must compromise speed in order to gain distance. The main desideratum is efficiency of both the machine and driving technique.
The '''Segway''' is an electric powered, upright scooter (see photo at right) used for transportation and recreation. Having only two wheels, the device has a footprint not much larger than a single person and travels at a top speed of 10-12 miles per hour.

The device is kept in balance, even without a rider, by computers and motors in the base, with gyroscopes being used to detect deviations from exact balance. In order to move, the user leans forward or backwards. A hand control enables turning.
The Segway was first introduced in late 2001 with regular sales starting in the Spring of 2003.
It takes two to Tango, and the Tango takes two!

The Tango car is a four-wheel, one or two passenger electric vehicle sold in kit form (approximately 8 hours assembly required). Because of its small size (width = 39 inches, length = 8 feet, 5 inches, height = 60 inches), the promoters bill it as capable of doubling freeway space and quadrupling parking. Indeed, two of these cars can easily fit side by side in a single lane of ordinary roadway and, as the picture at right attests, can even fit on a sidewalk with plenty of space to spare.

Vehicle weight is approximately 3050 pounds with 1125 pounds of that being in the battery pack. The batteries can be flash charged to 80% of capacity in 10 minutes. Vehicle range is advertised as 60-80 miles on a single charge and the promoters state that the roll cage meets race car specifications with a 5 star (highest) rollover stability rating.

''This page requires formatting attention''

So you're WRITING A PAPER / DOING RESEARCH on ELECTRIC CARS

I KNOW..... I know...... your first IMPULSE is to send me an e-mail message which reads like this:
"I'm writing a paper on [[electric vehicles|Electric Cars]], and I like your web site. Can you send me more information??? Please ???? "
But ALL the information is already here, and I hope this new section will help you realize this. You can still send me E-Mail on specific questions, or on my ION-1 car, which I very much hope to sell, has been sold.

When I started in the EV Business over 18 years ago, there were NONE of this wealth of information so readily available. It was all word of mouth, and just a few books. So in a few weeks you have the opportunity to come up to speed with what took others decades to accomplish. Good Luck, and may all your miles be clean quiet EV Miles.

==General==

* First and Foremost, READ this Web Site in its ENTIRETY. The answers to your questions may already be here.

* Scan all the links to other information on the NET. Especially The ALTERNATIVE FUELED VEHICLE List (http://www.vwc.edu/wwwpages/gnoe/avd.htm), which is a neatly alphabetized list of all known Electric Car and Alternative Fueled Vehicles sites.

* Join the EV News Group (http://geocities.com/ev_list/). Its a wealth of questions, answers, comentary, comming to you as daily E-Mail. If you do not wish to Join the EV News Group, and receive daily E-Mail from 900 members world wide, but just wish to scan past articles on their archive sites, surf the acrhives. (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/ev-list-archive/) Our ftp site for archiving shared files is funded by owner Zig Zichterman. Instructions can be seen at: http://www.best.com/~ziggr/ftp/evl/ftpsite.html BROKEN. Most computers/ browser programs allow you to go to your ''Edit'' mode and click on ''find'' and type in a search word, and go down through the very large list and find specific articles and postings by this method.

* When you come across an article or a person who has written something interesting or relevant to your work, or paper, E-Mail them DIRECTLY, and request specific info. PLEASE Please, DO NOT use the words..... “ send me more information” We are all too busy to try to fill up an Open Ended Note Book like that. This question is too broad. It has taken days, weeks for me to write and create my whole web site. You can not expect us to RE-Write and Mail you a personal copy.

* Check out the New [[Chapters|ELECTRIC AUTO ASSOCIATION]] Home Page This is an organization which has been helping EV people since 1972, out of California. Their toll free phone number for your nearest EAA club is : 1-800-537-2882. But check out Their EAA Web Site.

* Do not forget my book list, and phone list (Bottom of Page). Of course your own public library, or book store.

* Chip Gribbons List of Books, Magazines, and News Letters (http://www.radix.net/%7Efuturev/books.html)

* Here's yet ANOTHER Link to the "History of the Electric Car" (http://sloan.stanford.edu/EVehicle/)

* ''Debunking the Myth of EVs and Smokestacks'' (http://www.radix.net/%7Efuturev/pwrplnt.pdf), by Chip Gribben. Download this paper that dispells the myth that EVs transfer [[Pollution]] to coal plants.

==General==

* For The ENGINEER - Graphs and Charts of EV performance ...Compliments of the National Idaho Energy and Environmental Laboratories. This is GOOD DATA for your EV Paper! http://ev.inel.gov/

* ''Debunking the Myth of EVs and Smokestacks'' (http://www.radix.net/%7Efuturev/pwrplnt.pdf), by Chip Gribben. Download this paper that dispells the myth that EVs transfer [[Pollution]] to coal plants.
So, this might be a conversation. I sign it with the [[image:button_sig.png]] button in the edit toolbar, looks like <nowiki>--~~~~</nowiki> that. Here you see an example of a simple image, which you can [[Special:Upload]] aswell. Feel free to correct spelling and grammer errors, untill there is a spellchecker --[[User:Rjf|Rjf]] 01:35, 4 Aug 2005 (CDT)
Ya, well, I'm starting a whole new tangent so HA! Did you know that it's simple to make ''Itilace'' with two ' and '''bold''' with three of them, and of course the toolbar does these types of things for you to. --[[User:Bar|Bar]]
: Yup, and links have [[]] arround the page name, similar to images and other wiki-ness. Four - dashes is a bar, like this one... --[[User:Rjf|Rjf]] 01:58, 4 Aug 2005 (CDT)
==License policy==

What is the license policy of this wiki? Is it GFDL? Or what? I just created the [[SeattleEVA:General_disclaimer|General disclaimer]] article, but could not say anything about the license policy. [[User:63.24.51.82|63.24.51.82]] 16:12, 10 June 2006 (CDT)
: Yes I think that the [[WikiPedia:Text of the GNU Free Documentation License|GFDL]] or one of the [[WikiPedia:Creative Commons|Creative Commons]] Licenses would be appropriate, would you happen to have any advice regarding which might be best? Thanks for all your rescent edits, care to have an account? --[[User:Rjf|Rjf]] 02:16, 11 June 2006 (CDT)
==Root categories==

I am creating ''root categories''. There should be no more than 10 or 12 root categories. The "primary page" category seemed somewhat like a dumping bin, with most of the pages otherwise unclassified. Here is a prospective list of root categories:

* Energy Sources
* SEVA
* Publications (or Books and Periodicals)
* EVents
* Politics (or Political and Social Issues, or . . .)
* Businesses and Organizations
* Electric Vehicles
* Transportation

Of course, articles can go iinto multiple categories. It is not a hierarchical directory. The root categories are those categories which themselves are not sub-cats of any other category (even if they ''could'' be, like SEVA could be a sub-cat of Businesses and Organizations - it just doesn't have to be, and in the case of the SEVA wiki, should not be). [[User:63.24.97.28|63.24.97.28]] 12:44, 11 June 2006 (CDT)

==[[Research]] article==

Me again, this time from the KingCo Library, hence the different IP address. I will be formatting the [[research]] article. I plan on re-formatting all email addresses to hide them from BOTS (example: usernameATdomainDOTcom - using AT and DOT instead of @ and .). I'm thinking of splitting off at least the EV Books section into a separate article ([[Bibliography]]) which will start the Publicatons category.
